Dr. Hughes W. Day in Kansas City demonstrated the benefits of intensive care units for treating patients who developed acute coronary attacks. Dr. William Allen directed a study of hospitals to determine the availability of intensive care for coronary patients and the need to trim staff. 121 RNs and 66 LPNs were trained and all medical students, interns, and residents rotated through the ICU. Few hospitals were providing this service. [AER]
